When comparing the Kwikset Kevo Convert Bluetooth Smart Lock to other brands, its price tag is significantly lower. Instead of replacing the existing deadbolt, it will retrofit on the inside of the door. The lock will automatically lock/unlock the deadbolt per requests made through the companion Kevo app, which is available for both Android and iOS devices.
Kwikset Kevo Convert’s retrofit installation is appealing to short-term property owners and landlords. Tenants are also turning to the lock, since it does not alter the existing deadbolts’ structure and doesn’t require swapping the deadbolt out. The lock utilizes a Bluetooth chipset to connect with the authorized smartphone. The Bluetooth connection is solid and reliable, as well as the Nest Learning Thermostat, SkyBell Video Doorbell and Ring Video Doorbell integrations.
No Remote Access Outside The Bluetooth Range
The downside to the Kevo Convert is the fact that it does not offer remote access. The user must be within the Bluetooth range to activate the lock or check its status. Nest and IFTTT is the only third-party integrations is about as far as it goes, eliminating the SmartThings, Wink, Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit Smart Home platforms.
The Convert consists of a Bluetooth radio, battery pack and a motorized lock-turning mechanism. The “Smarts” are fairly similar to that you control with the same Kevo app, but the touch-to-open feature is not available.
The Kwikset Kevo Convert is compatible with doors between 1-3/8” and 1-3/4” in thickness. The installation process requires an existing deadbolt that sits separately above the handle. The companion app will lead you through the installation process, plus it includes several adapters and sets of parts.
Pairing the lock to a phone is pretty simple and can be completed in a matter of minutes. From the app, users can check the lock’s status, lock and unlock the lock, share e-keys with others, set time barriers when access is allowed and denied and check access history.
The Kevo Plus Gateway Plug, an upgrade that delivers remote access from anywhere, will be required to extend the range.
While, the Kwikset Kevo Convert Smart Lock does not offer remote access from afar, touch-to-open or voice automation capabilities, it is a great option for renters. The retrofit design gives it a competitive edge, but will work better for consumers that are looking for basic Smartness.
